Actually I was talking shop with someone last March and a deal was rumoured to be on the table even then. To be perfectly honest I'm surprised there wasn't an option for it from the start. I imagine it was rather more to do with the rush to get volume for a world wide release than any technical. That said, including a HD-DVD initially would have pushed the entry price right up.
